Day Eight - 66 degrees south

We keep getting better and better experiences. This morning we went further south than any other boat had yet this year and ended up at 66 degrees 1 minute S(called The Fish Islands). Not a sound to be heard, no pollution in the water, nothing. The harbor had just unfroze and it was evident when doing the kayaking around.

We could clearly see the amount of ice under the surface when going from berg to berg.

It was the first time that we did get in and out of the zodiacs, which was actually easier than launching from the shore. This was really a bonus port for us as they expected huge resistance from the ice but since they had no problems in the connecting channels we’re happy we were the first people this year to check it out. (Even their attempt to reach here last week was thwarted).

Time to start heading back north now. 55 miles to the afternoon stop to do a zodiac tour of the South Penola Islands / Alure Islands/ [Yalour Islands]). Nothing really special here.

The third spot today is Vernadsky Islands. This is “the most southerly gift shop in the world”. Letters mailed from here do take roughly 6 months to 1 year to make it to the US. This station is rather famous in that it is the spot that discovered the hole in the ozone.

It’s camping night!!

This is a great example of how much you need to be flexible. Below was the projected plan for today but we went further south than expected.
